Enhancing Livelihood Opportunities in Herat’s Informal Settlements

Challenge

In Herat, Afghanistan, residents of informal settlements face limited economic opportunities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and vulnerability. Unemployment rates are high, and access to formal employment is often restricted, exacerbating socio-economic disparities within the city.

Solution

Recognizing the importance of economic empowerment in promoting sustainable development, the Afghan Center for Urban Studies and Municipal Affairs embarked on a project to enhance livelihood opportunities in Herat’s informal settlements. The initiative aimed to create pathways for income generation and entrepreneurship among residents.

Implementation

The project adopted a multi-faceted approach, combining skills training, microenterprise development, and market linkages to support livelihood diversification and economic resilience. Training programs were tailored to the needs and interests of community members, covering a range of sectors such as handicrafts, small-scale agriculture, and service-oriented businesses.

To facilitate access to markets and finance, the project established partnerships with local businesses, financial institutions, and market vendors. Mentoring and coaching sessions were provided to aspiring entrepreneurs, guiding them through the process of business planning, marketing, and financial management.

Impact

As a result of the project, residents of Herat’s informal settlements experienced improved economic prospects and enhanced self-reliance. Many participants successfully launched small businesses or expanded existing ventures, generating sustainable income for themselves and their families.

The project not only contributed to poverty reduction but also fostered a sense of pride and empowerment within the communities. By harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity of residents, the initiative demonstrated the potential for inclusive economic development to transform lives and revitalize urban areas.
